EH-ruh-whon

Back in the day, they’d say, “If you want to see a celebrity, take them to a Lakers game.” Today we say, “If you want to see a celebrity, take them to Erewhon.”
Erewhon is the Louis Vuitton of grocery stores. Full stop. And whatever you’ve heard, its not that expensive. (Read: everything in LA is expensive.)
Kerry Howley's November 2023 New York Magazine article, Erewhon's Secrets, is written the way the exclusive Los Angeles stores are organized: perfectly. Founded in 1966 by a Japanese couple, Michio and Aveline Kushi, the shop was originally vegan. Strictly vegan. The current owners, the Antoci family, have loosened the reins on nightshades and meat, but everything on Erewhons shelves is still the superlative of high-quality. What's better than organic? Biodynamic. Adding its own bit of voodoo chic to LA’s already unique culture, the shop's iconic label is an anagram of Nowhere, Howley writes, after Samuel Butler’s satirical novel of the same name.
Howleys piece, as well as a couple others penned for the iconic grocery, are linked here. Note that paywalls may exist.
